Summary

Grace and Bloom is the Ayurvedic answer at Munkudil to PCOD, perimenopause and other hormonal imbalances, working to restore the natural rhythm of the body rather than the cycle alone. Across fourteen nights by the river, therapies, diet and daily practice are set by an Ayurvedic doctor, and guests leave with a renewed sense of balance and a routine they can carry forward.

Experience the Retreat

Hormonal imbalance rarely arrives on its own. Irregular cycles, weight that will not shift, disturbed sleep, low energy and changes in mood tend to travel together, and Ayurveda reads them as a pattern rather than a list of separate complaints. Grace and Bloom is built around that reading.

The programme opens with a consultation. An Ayurvedic doctor assesses constitution, digestive strength, medical history and current concerns, then sets the therapies, herbal preparations and diet for the fourteen nights ahead. No two guests follow the same plan, and the plan itself is adjusted as the body responds.
Daily therapy sits at the centre of the stay. Depending on what the assessment shows, treatment may draw on Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Marma Abhyanga, Padabhyanga and other classical therapies, supported by herbal medicines prepared for the individual. Morning yoga and meditation run alongside, chosen to suit the guest rather than the group.

Food is treated as part of the treatment. Meals are sattvic, cooked from fresh local ingredients and adjusted through the stay as the therapies progress, which is a large part of why a fortnight works where a few days would not.
The pace is deliberate. Between sessions there is river, forest, birdsong and time to sit with it, along with sound healing on Himalayan singing bowls and Agnihotra fire ritual when they suit the day. Guests finish with a closing consultation and a routine of diet, practice and daily habits built to continue at home, which is where the real work of hormonal balance carries on.

Why This Retreat Stands Out

Most wellness programmes for women treat the symptom in front of them. This one works on the underlying rhythm, which is why it runs to fourteen nights rather than a long weekend, and why the plan is set by an Ayurvedic doctor after consultation rather than sold as a fixed package.

The setting does real work too. Seven rooms only, built from red stone, mud and palmwood on the bank of the Kuttampuzha River, with a yogashala, a Zen garden and forest on three sides. There is no crowd to navigate and nothing to do but the programme, which is the point of coming this far.

Program

Arrival day: check-in, settling into the room and the opening consultation with the Ayurvedic doctor, who sets the treatment plan, herbal preparations and diet for the fortnight. The first therapy usually follows the same day or the next morning.

Days two to fourteen: mornings open with yoga and meditation at the yogashala, followed by the prescribed Ayurvedic therapies of the day and the diet set by the doctor. Consultations continue through the stay so treatment can be adjusted, and afternoons leave time for rest, birdwatching, river walks or sound healing.

Final day: a closing consultation reviews progress and sets out the diet, practice and daily routine to carry home. Guests check out after the session, with time to settle travel arrangements comfortably.

Food Details

Meals are sattvic, cooked from fresh local ingredients and put together to support the treatment rather than sit beside it. Vegetables, fruit, grains, lentils and herbs come from the surrounding farmland where possible, and the kitchen keeps the cooking simple enough to let the food do its work.

The doctor adjusts the diet through the stay as the therapies progress, which matters a great deal on a programme of this length. Guests with allergies or specific dietary requirements should share them before arrival so the kitchen can plan around them properly.

Munkudil Ayurveda and Yoga Retreat

Thirteen rooms on the bank of the Kuttampuzha River, each named after a Kerala flower, built from red stone from Kannur, palmwood from Palakkad and mud dug from the same land. A yogashala, an Ayurveda treatment room, a Zen garden with a ten foot Buddha and a swimming pool make up the rest.
What sets Munkudil apart is that the building and the programme come from the same thinking. Sattvic food is cooked from local produce, Ayurvedic doctors set each plan personally, and the forest and river are part of the day rather than the view.

Set at Njayappilly on the Thattekkadu to Kuttampuzha road, this retreat sits on the bank of the Kuttampuzha River in the Mamalakandam forest area of Ernakulam district. Forest, mountains and river fill the view on every side, and the quiet here is the working kind rather than the arranged kind.

The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, named for Salim Ali, is the neighbour, which makes early morning birdwatching a habit rather than an excursion. Kayaking and boating on the river, waterfalls, forest walks, cycling, jeep safaris and cultural trips through the nearby farmland villages fill whatever time the programme leaves free

Travel Information

flight

The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), Nedumbassery, Kerala, India, the main gateway to the state. It carries domestic flights from every major Indian city and international connections from the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Europe.

From the airport the drive runs east towards Kothamangalam and on to Thattekkadu and Kuttampuzha, taking roughly two hours depending on traffic and the final forest road. A taxi or a transfer arranged through the centre is the practical choice, and it is worth sharing flight details in advance so the arrival can be planned.

train

Ernakulam Railway Station is the main rail head for the region, with direct connections to Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram and most other major Indian cities. Aluva Railway Station is the other practical option and sits closer to the airport side of the city.

From either station a taxi covers the last stretch through Kothamangalam and Thattekkadu, taking around two to two and a half hours. Roads are good most of the way, with the final approach running along quieter forest roads, so an arranged transfer is easier than hunting for transport on arrival.

bus

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation and private buses serve Kothamangalam, the nearest large town, from Ernakulam, Munnar, Thrissur and Thodupuzha. Kothamangalam is the sensible transfer point for anyone travelling by road on public transport.

From Kothamangalam local buses and autos run towards Thattekkadu and Kuttampuzha, though services thin out later in the day. Guests carrying luggage will find a direct taxi from Kothamangalam or from Ernakulam considerably easier than piecing the last leg together.

taxi

A pre-booked taxi is the simplest way to reach the retreat, particularly for international guests and anyone arriving with luggage. From Cochin International Airport the drive takes roughly two hours, and from Ernakulam Railway Station around two to two and a half hours.

App-based cabs work reliably within Kochi but thin out towards the forest, so a local operator or a transfer arranged through the centre is the better option for the full journey. Give the driver the address at Njayappilly, Thattekkadu, Kuttampuzha, Kerala 686681.

car

From Kochi, head east towards Perumbavoor and Kothamangalam, then continue on the Thattekkadu to Kuttampuzha road. The distance is roughly 65 to 70 km and the drive takes about two hours, with the last stretch running through forest and farmland.

Navigation apps find the retreat without difficulty, though mobile signal is patchy on the final approach, so it helps to have the route saved offline. Parking is available on site, which makes self-drive practical for guests travelling within Kerala.

FAQ's

It is designed for women managing PCOD, perimenopause or other hormonal imbalances, and for anyone wanting to work on the underlying rhythm rather than the cycle alone. The Ayurvedic doctor confirms suitability at the opening consultation.

No. The plan follows the consultation, which covers constitution, digestive strength, medical history and current concerns. Therapies, herbal preparations and diet differ from guest to guest, and are adjusted through the stay as the body responds.

Hormonal patterns settle slowly, and a fortnight allows the therapies, diet and daily routine to build on one another rather than being sampled. Shorter stays are available for other programmes, but this one is built around the longer arc.

Treatment may draw on Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Marma Abhyanga, Padabhyanga and other classical therapies alongside herbal preparations, with the combination decided by the doctor. Yoga and meditation run alongside the therapy each day.

In many cases, yes. Tell the Ayurvedic doctor about all medications and any diagnosed condition at the consultation so the programme can be planned safely alongside your existing treatment. This programme supports wellbeing and does not replace medical care.

Thirteen rooms, each named after a Kerala flower and built from natural materials including red stone, palmwood and mud, with river or mountain views. Options run from ground floor patio rooms to a treehouse and a rooftop birdwatching hut.

Sattvic vegetarian meals cooked from fresh local ingredients, with the diet adjusted through the stay by the doctor as part of the treatment. Allergies and dietary requirements should be shared before arrival.

Birdwatching at the Thattekkad sanctuary, kayaking and boating on the Kuttampuzha River, cycling, forest walks, waterfalls, jeep safaris and cultural trips to nearby villages. Sound healing on Himalayan singing bowls and Agnihotra fire ritual are also offered.

Yes. With only seven rooms the atmosphere is quiet and personal, and the treehouse in particular is built for solo guests. The programme itself is one to one with the doctor and the therapists.

The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). ATMs and banks are available at Kothamangalam, the nearest town, so it is worth carrying some cash before heading out to the forest for a long stay.

Further Details About the Retreat

This is a doctor led Ayurvedic programme rather than a spa break, and the fourteen nights are structured around treatment. Guests should expect a daily rhythm of therapy, yoga and prescribed diet, with the free time real but planned around the schedule rather than the other way round.

Because the work at Munkudil is medical in character, existing conditions and current medication genuinely matter. Share your medical history, any diagnosis and all medications ahead of arrival so the doctor can plan properly, and note that the programme supports wellbeing alongside professional medical care rather than replacing it.
