Experience the Retreat
Tantra yoga in its traditional form is a system of practice, not a philosophy to read about. This twenty one day intensive is built for people who want to step away from ordinary distraction and give three uninterrupted weeks to sadhana, in a setting that supports it rather than competing with it.

The syllabus runs across traditional tantra practice, meditation and contemplative technique, mantra and japa sadhana, pranayama and breath work, yogic purification, tantric philosophy, chakra and subtle energy awareness, concentration training and guided personal sadhana.

The emphasis throughout falls on practice, awareness and personal experience, supported by traditional teaching. Swami Omji leads the programme, and with a maximum of five students in the ashram at any time the guidance is direct and individual rather than delivered to a hall.

Life at the ashram is part of the training. Guests observe silence, self-discipline and mindful living through the three weeks, eat what the kitchen cooks, keep the daily rhythm and live as part of the household rather than as visitors passing through.
The setting supports all of it. A newly built ashram among rice and wheat fields, mountains on the horizon, nature trails from the gate and no city noise, ten minutes from Dharamshala when something is needed from town.

What guests leave with is a working personal sadhana rather than a certificate. Three weeks is enough to build the practice, understand the reasoning behind it and carry the routine home in a form that survives contact with ordinary life.

Why This Retreat Stands Out
This is traditional tantra rather than the modern version of the word, taught in an ashram that takes no more than five students at a time. Guests live alongside Omji and his family, which makes the teaching continuous rather than something that stops when the class ends.

Three weeks is long enough for sadhana to actually settle. Silence, self-discipline and mindful living are part of the arrangement, and the programme is written for practitioners willing to approach the subject with respect and commitment rather than curiosity alone.

A newly built ashram at Sidhpur, next to the Thosamling Nunnery and ten minutes from Dharamshala, set among rice and wheat fields with the Himalayas behind. Private bedrooms sit on the upper floor, most with ensuite bathrooms, and a five minute pathway connects to the main building.

What makes Bhagsu Yoga Ashram different is the scale. No more than five students at a time, meals cooked in the house and served by the family who live there, and three dogs who consider the place theirs. Saturdays run to a half day and Sundays are a rest day.

The ashram sits at Sidhpur, next to the Thosamling Nunnery and about ten minutes by road from Dharamshala. Rice and wheat fields surround it, the Himalayas fill the horizon, and the quiet here is the ordinary quiet of a farming valley rather than something arranged for visitors.

Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are close enough for an afternoon, with the Dalai Lama temple and Namgyal Monastery, the Bhagsu waterfall, the Norbulingka Institute nearby at Sidhpur itself, and the Triund trek for anyone with the legs for it. Nature trails run straight out from the ashram gate.

Travel Information

flight

Gaggal Airport at Dharamshala is the nearest, roughly twenty minutes from the ashram, with domestic flights from Delhi. Pickup from the airport is included in the programme, so flight details should be shared with the ashram in advance.

The alternative for international travellers is to fly into Delhi and continue overland, either by an onward domestic flight to Gaggal or by the overnight road journey. Gaggal is a small airport and flights are weather dependent, so allow a buffer day rather than arriving on the morning the programme starts.

train

The nearest broad gauge railhead is Pathankot, around 85 km away and roughly three hours by road, well connected with Delhi, Amritsar and Jammu. Overnight trains from Delhi arrive in the morning, which leaves a comfortable drive up into the hills.

The narrow gauge Kangra Valley Railway also runs from Pathankot to Kangra and Baijnath, slow but memorable through the foothills. From either station a taxi covers the remaining stretch, and it is worth arranging the car before travelling.

bus

Overnight buses run from Delhi to Dharamshala, taking around twelve hours, operated by Himachal Road Transport Corporation and by private Volvo services from Kashmere Gate and Majnu Ka Tila. Buses also connect from Chandigarh, Amritsar, Manali and Shimla.

Pickup from the Dharamshala bus stand is included in the programme, so arrival details should be sent ahead. Guests arriving on an overnight service usually reach town early in the morning, which fits well with settling in before the day begins.

taxi

A pre-booked taxi is the simplest option from Pathankot, Amritsar or Chandigarh, and the only practical one late in the evening. From Pathankot the drive takes around three hours, from Amritsar about five and from Chandigarh roughly seven.

App based cabs do not run reliably in the hills, so book through a local operator or ask the ashram to recommend one. Give the driver the address at Sidhpur, next to Thosamling Nunnery, since the final approach runs through village roads.

car

From Delhi the drive covers roughly 480 km and takes around eleven to twelve hours, running through Ambala, Jalandhar and Pathankot before the climb into the Kangra valley. Most guests break the journey or travel overnight.

The final stretch to Sidhpur runs on narrow village roads through the fields, and the ashram itself is a five minute walk along a pathway from where a car can stop. Bring a backpack rather than a suitcase, which makes that last stretch a good deal easier.

FAQ'S

It is written for sincere practitioners willing to approach tantra yoga with respect, commitment, openness and discipline. Three weeks of silence, self-discipline and mindful living is a real undertaking, and the programme suits people who want depth rather than an introduction.

Traditional tantra yoga practice, meditation and contemplative technique, mantra and japa sadhana, pranayama and breath work, yogic purification, tantric philosophy, chakra and subtle energy awareness, concentration training and guided personal sadhana.

The programme is described as intensive sadhana for sincere practitioners rather than a beginners course. Anyone unsure whether their current practice is a suitable starting point should write to the ashram before booking.

The ashram takes a maximum of five students at any time. That is the whole point of the format, since it makes the teaching direct and individual rather than delivered to a group

Saturday runs as a half day and Sunday is a full rest day. Over three weeks that gives real recovery time, which matters on a programme built around daily sadhana rather than occasional practice.

The twenty one day programme, private room accommodation, all meals through the retreat, and pickup from Dharamshala airport or the Dharamshala bus stand. Flights, visa and travel insurance are arranged by the guest.

Private bedrooms on the upper floor of the ashram, most with ensuite bathrooms and some sharing. The main building is a five minute walk along a pathway, so a backpack is a great deal more practical than a suitcase.

All meals are cooked on the premises, usually with fresh juice in the morning, in homemade Indian style with occasional Tibetan dishes and predominantly vegetarian. Dietary requirements are accommodated on request.

Modest clothing is required, which means covered shoulders and midriff and no short bottoms during classes and daily activities. It keeps the environment respectful and focused, and the same applies when visiting temples nearby.

Yes. With a maximum of five students and the family living on site, solo guests are looked after closely. Everyone stays in a private room, so there is no sharing with a stranger.
